One little monkey

You know that song "one little monkey jumping on the bed..."?

Yeah....
Our little monkey and gravity have been getting awfully close lately.

The scab under her nose was sustained when she fell during Olympics day at school. The rest happened during a full on head over heels tumble all the way down the stairs. Skinned nose, bumped head, extra damage to the aforementioned scab, and what I suspect will be a nice little shiner come tomorrow morning.

Bless her heart, once she got calmed down she said "I gotta try that again,"  climbed to the top of the stairs, and carefully went bump the rest of the way.

Totally fearless this one. Unless one of her toys makes a sound. Then forget about it.

Making Progress

Another sticker on the potty chart means Monkey has earned her second surprise, a Disney Princess nail polish set!

That red string around her neck is holding her "shiny gold medal" because they played Olympics at school today.

She wanted her nails done as soon as Smoke got home; Cinderella blue toes and Little Mermaid green fingers.

(Not to take away the spotlight here, but I also feel obligated to congratulate Froggy on her first photobomb. Well done Pacified One.)

Yummy

I wonder if Froggy fingers taste the same as frog legs?

Overheard

Smoke:  How hungry are you?

Monkey:  Ummm...three and a half!

Guess who had a cookie with blue frosting...

Monkey cracked up laughing when she saw herself in the camera.

A Bit Of An Update

Well, we went the entire month of June without a blog post so I figured a little update might be appreciated.

- Family, Family, Everywhere:  We had a couple weeks at the end of May and beginning of June when we had an abundance of visitors.  Smoke's sister and niece came to visit for a week and we had a great time.  Then right after that we had my mom, Smoke's mom & dad, brother, and friends from Arizona all come to visit for Froggy's baby blessing (it's a Mormon thing).  It was great to see everyone and we had lots of good food and conversation, but it was also kind of nice when the house was quiet and we had the girls to ourselves again.  Having everyone visit (and a couple of church pot-lucks) gave Smoke some great opportunities to try out some new recipes and get back into cooking a bit so that was a great side effect.

- Back To Work/School:  Smoke's maternity leave ran out in June and she returned to work.  It went pretty well and things are rolling right along especially now that there are two good financial aid reps in the office that can work together.  Apparently the first order of business when she got back was to reorganize all the office furniture.  Probably the hardest part was putting Monkey & Froggy back into day care.  Luckily the center we used when it was just Monkey will accept babies as young as one month so we were able to get Froggy enrolled without having to change "schools" or separate the girls.  Of course all the teachers and staff were very happy to see Monkey come back and just went nuts over Froggy the first day.  Getting back into a routine is an ongoing challenge now that there are two littles to get ready every day and fed every night, but we're working on it.  It was also a bit of a shock that our monthly child care costs are now more than our mortgage payment.

- Yard Progress:  The fence is finally done!  It only took three months, but I was able to finish the fence during June and check that project off my to-do list with the help of a couple of my Father's Day gifts.  Brownie has figured out she can run all over the yard now without getting shocked by the invisible fence.  Red hasn't been so quick to adjust and will only wander out farther than usual if I am walking with him which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  The other accomplishment as far as the yard goes has been the addition of about 2,000 square feet of artificial turf around the back patio.  At a home show this past Spring we found a landscaping company that takes the used turf from sports field and such and recycles it for residential and commercial lawn use.  It's about half the price of standard artificial turf installation, but left a bit to be desired as far as quality and professionalism.  We're actually still waiting for them to return and install the edging around the turf, but it's down and Monkey and the dogs love running and playing on it and hopefully it will keep the dust down a bit.

- Swim Break:  Monkey seemed to fizzle out with regard to her swimming lessons and lose interest.  So we took her out for a session and will get her re-enrolled in July and see how she does.  Other than that she is doing pretty good considering she is a three year old and getting a bit of an attitude.  We are still working on potty training.  Her last dentist visit went extremely well.  She got a bit of a cold in June but is over it now.  Her imagination continues to amaze us as she tells us stories, "cooks" for us and brings us food, and interacts with her favorite TV shows and movies.  She is also talking frequently now about friends at school, particularly a little boy which I may have to look further into.

- Where'd The Tiny Baby Go?:  Froggy has just about doubled in weight since she was born and is getting some long legs to go with it.  She is already starting to do things I don't remember Monkey doing so young.  She is constantly lifting her head up and trying to look around in what seems to me to be an effort to take in everything around her.  In the past week she has started trying to roll over onto her belly when laid on her back.  She gets most of the way over but ends up with her arm stuck underneath her and gets frustrated.  She also has been making efforts to sit up so we have started propping her up and using her booster seat to help her gain some strength.  When she does lay on her back without trying to fight it her favorite things have become her musical mobile and her play mat.  She smiles a HUGE smile almost every time the music starts on the mobile and as she continues to develop better muscle control and coordination the toys hanging from the arch on the play mat have become her favorite things to swat at and grab.  Speaking of her smiles...one worker in the infant room at day care said they have never seen a baby who smiles as much as our Froggy.  That's nice to hear and we are lucky we have two happy little ones.

- New "Jobs":  Smoke and I have both been asked to help out with different things are church over the past month.  Smoke was asked to help out in the Family History program and help people learn how to research and use the varied computer programs for research and tracking.  I was asked to be a Cub Scout leader for a group of three to four Bear-age boys (third graders).  Neither of us have really gotten a handle on these new responsibilities yet, but we're working on it.

I think that pretty much covers the month of June and a bit extra.  Things are going well and everyone is doing great.  Hope you all are too.  -  Pa

4th of July in Florence

We went to a small town nearby called Florence to celebrate the 4th. Froggy pretty much just sat around looking cute.
If perhaps a little unimpressed.

Monkey met a clown that painted a pretty patriotic butterfly on her arm.

And she got to ride a pony!!

TWICE!!!!

Smoke's New(ish) Ride

This Lady is on her fourth vehicle in the almost five years I've known her.  I can't say anything bad though because she always gets exactly what she wants for exactly how much she wants to spend.  Actually....I'm not allowed to buy my own cars anymore.

This time it is a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country Touring Edition minivan (because one additional child means you need four times the space).  The van is loaded with leather, a dual DVD player with two sets of headphones, remote self opening/closing rear doors and tailgate, and a ton of other stuff.  She got it for the same payments as her lease on a base model 2014 Honda CR-V while ending the lease 18 months early.  She wanted to keep the finance worksheets as a trophy because when all was said and done she worked them for $4500 off their original offer.

And Monkey likes it too because she can get into the van and up in her seat all by herself (but we still have to work on how to safely exit the vehicle).

Monkey Is Growing Up Faster & Faster

Big girl waiting for her swim class to start this morning.

Just about every night we watch an episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse together in our bedroom before bedtime.  It's Monkey's favorite show. She usually climbs into bed with Smoke and me to watch it, but tonight she wanted to sit in our big chair all by herself instead.

A Sister First

It's Monkey & Froggy's first night sharing their room.  I think Smoke is having separation anxiety and withdrawals but that's what baby monitors are for. 😉

She Is A Monkey After All

She couldn't wait to get home.  Monkey had to have a banana as soon as we got out of the grocery store.

Rain Fun

Waiting for and playing in the rain. (Don't worry, it's an all-weather flag with a solar spotlight.)

Minnie Bows

Smoke made Monkey some hair bows to match her outfit.

More Appropriate Blog Handle

I don't mind being called "Pa" even though I'm not that old in the grand scheme of life.  There's a sense of experience and wisdom in that word to me.  However, since we updated the blog using pseudonyms I haven't been able to get comfortable using "Ma" to describe my amazing wife.  She is loving and she enjoys cooking and baking, sure.  But there is much more to her than that.  She is funny, whimsical, silly, affectionate, and serious when she has to be.  Those that know me at all can pretty much surmise that music and quotes play a big part in my thinking.  I'm also an ex-smoker and still have a hard time avoiding the temptation to join coworkers in this habit at times.  So in trying to come up with a new blog handle for Ma the song "Smoke" by 1000 Horses took the lead (although I decided not to use the official video because it gets a bit racy).  So from now on, Ma will be known as Smoke on this blog.  She goes where the breeze takes her at every moment and fills any space with her personality.

Love you Smoke!

She's Smoke
I pull her in nice and slow
She's a habit and I can't let go
Blowing rings around my heart
The one she stole
Watching her sway and go
It's killing me and I know
Can't stop her once you start
She's Smoke

Momming

Pa and my girls made sure I had a lovely Mother's Day. As usual. Pa likes to spoil me and lately I've had a yen for kitchen gear so he got me a beautiful shiny new crockpot. We have a small one but I tend to fill it up to the tippy top and it's hard to take to potlucks and such. My shiny new one is BIG and has a shmancy locking lid. YAY! He also got me a pizza stone which I'm really excited to experiment with. And I got me a 12 inch cast iron skillet. I've been watching too much Pioneer Woman lately and have convinced myself I can't cook without a cast iron skillet.

I started my morning snuggling my sweethearts.
We had a lovely breakfast with some silly faces.

Then we went for a drive to the lake and threw rocks.

Swim Class

They sang happy birthday to Monkey at swim class. You can't see the HUGE grin on her face but she was so excited.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONKEY!

Monkey turned 3 today.  It was pretty exciting.  The day started out with a bubble bath, while wearing her birthday crown of course.

Then she got dressed in her special Birthday Princess shirt.

And ate her favorite breakfast, waffles with whipped cream and a glass of milk.

After that it was time to just relax for a while.

While Ma did some major birthday prep.  Just check out that cake!

She got her very own Minnie Mouse balloon.

And her favorites for dinner: chicken nuggets, French fries, macaroni and cheese, and chocolate milk.

She also discovered that she likes Ma's sweet & sour sauce.

Then it was time for that amazing cake.

Even Froggy got a little taste.

And finally...PRESENTS.

A new princess for her birthday train.

Minnie Mouse dress-up costume and Candyland game.

A new dress for church.

A "Min-Min" outfit.

And her very first dollhouse, because her pretending and imagination skills have exploded lately.

Now it's just time to play and relax with the family.
